WHAT IS COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS?

Community Corrections is designed to save tax dollars by providing sentences for nonviolent offenders.

WHY HAVE COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS?

When offenders are imprisoned it costs you and me approximately $12,000 a year to house, clothe and feed each one. This cost does not include the cost of prison facility construction. When the offender returns to the community they are frequently more violent and more accomplished criminals. While in prison they cannot repay their victims for the harm they have done nor can they repay the community the cost we have incurred. Frequently, community residents through the welfare system support dependents of imprisoned offenders.

WHAT DOES COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS DO THAT IS DIFFERENT?

When an offender is assigned to Community Corrections the taxpayers do not feed, clothe or house them. The offender is expected to pay restitution to the victims of the crime as well as paying court costs. They are expected to support their dependents rather than being supported by us. Supervision through Community Corrections is designed to teach offenders to take responsibility for themselves and their actions.

HOW DOES COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS DO THAT?

For a fraction of the cost of imprisoning an offender for one year, Community Corrections can closely monitor an offender's activities that include daily monitoring as needed. If offenders are addicted to alcohol or other drugs, Community Corrections can refer clients to treatment programs. If offenders have psychological problems, they can also be referred to counseling. Offenders can earn a high school diploma or GED while in the program. Community Corrections teaches offenders how to effectively apply for a job and maintain employment.
